Steven M. Pirner, Pierre, South Dakota, was appointed Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources by Governor William J. Janklow effective June 1, 2000. As Secretary, he oversees the agency responsible for environmental and natural resources assessment, financial assistance, and regulation in a customer service oriented manner which provides protection of public health, conservation of natural resources, preservation of the environment, and promotes economic development.
Pirner is a native of Rapid City, South Dakota. He began working for the department in 1979 and has served as Program Administrator, Division Director, and Acting Secretary during his tenure with the agency. His professional career also includes serving as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, working as the South Dakota State Engineer for Region VIII of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and as an assistant professor at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. He has a Bachelor and Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Steve is also a registered Professional Engineer in South Dakota.
Steve is a member of a number of professional organizations including the Water Environment Federation, American Water Works Association, Association of Civil Engineers, and National Society of Professional Engineers.
