Biography for

Kevin R. Szcodronski

Kevin Szcodronski began public service for the Iowa Conservation Commission in 1978. The Commission was reorganized in 1986 into the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) where he currently serves as an Executive Assistant. He is a native of Michigan, but he, along with his wife, son, and daughter, now call Iowa their home. He has a B.S. degree in Forestry and Wildlife Resources from Virginia Tech and a M.S. degree in Parks and Recreation Resources from Michigan State University.

Kevin has been involved in river planning and coordination throughout his career. He is the primary author of Iowa’s Protected Water Areas General Plan, which is the foundation for a program similar to what most states call "scenic" or "natural" rivers.

In addition to serving as the Governor’s appointee on the Missouri River Basin Association, he is Iowa’s primary member on the Upper Mississippi River Basin Association. He represents the state’s interests on several other interagency committees, such as the Missouri River Fish and Wildlife Mitigation Project Committee and the Upper Mississippi River Conservation Committee. Per the Governor’s directive, Kevin works closely with other state agencies in his work on the state’s two border rivers. The agencies include the Department of Transportation, Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Department of Economic Development, Department of Commerce, and Attorney General’s Office.

During Iowa’s legislative session, Kevin is one of two legislative liaisons for the Iowa DNR. His primary areas of emphasis for his legislative work are fish, wildlife, parks, recreation, forests, and prairies.

Kevin is also the coordinator for a program in Iowa called Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP). REAP is an investment by Iowa in the state’s natural and cultural resources. Five state agencies are directly involved in REAP and allocate money throughout the state via several programs involving land acquisition, facility developments, conservation education, roadside vegetation, historical resource development, and soil and water enhancements. As REAP coordinator, Kevin serves as the primary clearinghouse for general program information, administers two grant programs for local parks and open space projects, and organizes the 17 REAP assemblies and REAP congress that are held every other year.
